Field Day

Spontaneous Personal Field Day

Fall is already here, the weather will be changing  soon, business was having a slow day and I was restless. Perfect recipe for a drive up into the mountains. I decided to put a spin on things so I loaded up the HF rig, portable antenna, battery box along with all the works and headed up to the highest point I could find within a comfortable days round trip. Spontaneous personal field day.

I ended up on the top of Rock Point, about 5 miles north of Crater Lake National Park entrance.
Beautiful day, bright sunny skies and just a gentle breeze. As I approached the top of Rock Point on a rutted, steep dirt road in 4 wheel drive I spotted the perfect spot. A rock out crop big enough to back into with shade and a few taller trees to throw some paracord up for the antenna.

(Yep, that's coax. Didn't think to take pics until after I got set up. So just pretend it's not there yet.)

Gorgeous isn't it? In a few short weeks it will be a winter wonder land complete with about 10 feet of snow. The road you see in front of me is actually a snowmobile trail in the winter and 4 wheeler trail in the summer. But for today it's a perfect spot to play Radio!

It didn't take me long to learn lesson #1 - For some odd reason I throw like a girl ;) probably cause I am one.. always have had a challenged throwing arm.

Note to self- purchase a good wrist rocket for sending the cord into trees. After a few dozen tries I finally got the darn thing about 15ft up. Gonna be an NVIS antenna today, was shooting for an inverted V but it's what it is.

If I hadn't been alone some joker probably would have taken video of my hilarious attempts at throwing the bottle of water hooked to the cord into the trees. Thankfully you are saved the needless waste of time and my dignity stays somewhat intact.

Back to the set up. With the antenna put together and firmly strung out it ended up at about 15ft in the center and 6ft at the ends. On to the station set up. I tried to think of everything I would need but Murphy always strikes. After stringing out the coax, unpacking and setting up the rig and battery box I moved on to what should have been the easy part, the laptop. All set up I open up the computer and I had forgot to shut it down so it had been in sleep mode for a few hours draining the battery to below 1/4.

Lesson #2: Keep extra batteries in the go box or computer bag, not on the desk. As fate would have it the two extra batteries were 100 miles away sitting right in plain sight on my desk.  Of coarse. Deep breath,  just move on and deal.

Before I get on with the contacts I was able to make I'll tell you a little about the equipment I brought.

Battery box- described in a previous post, worked like a charm. Two 33ah gel wheelchair batteries set up in a Walmart tough box. Started the day with 13.3 on the meter and ended with 12.8, not bad.

HF rig- Yaesu ft450d. Good little radio, not a bunch of bells and whistles but has everything needed in a small package.

Antenna- CHA Tactical Dipole Lite. First time out with this and it's a keeper

Signal Link USB and a Windows 7 laptop running FLDIGI

Shade really messed with the pics of the station, wish some had turned out better.

All set up, turned on the rig and was pleasantly surprised with the reception. The 450d has an  internal tuner that will tune anything up to a 3:1. Even though the antenna suggests a wide range tuner the internal one had no problem tuning on 20 and 40. I did bring a manual tuner just in case but thankfully it was not needed.  After a call some AmRRON Corps contacts a few operators across the country joined in. We started on 40m digital but band conditions were not cooperating, even a station in Idaho couldn't get through to me. From my 6,000ft vantage point I think I could almost see their mountain tops  in the distance.

The Corps operators I was in contact with suggested 20m was looking much better. I only got a couple of  CQ's out at 25 watts when darned old Murphy killed my battery, and right when things started getting good. Reports were that what little signal I did get out was strong all across the country. So don't cry over dead batteries, on to plan B, voice. While I looked for the mic I knew was in one of the boxes I heard lots of contacts going on the digital frequency but without a laptop to decode it wasn't doing me much good. Well at least I knew reception was good. After switching to 20m voice I received contacts in Tennessee, West Virginia, Arkansas and Oklahoma right away.  I was running 50 watts trying to save battery but looking back I probably could have bumped the power up a little more. I was receiving signals 5-9 but only West Virginia and Arkansas heard me above the noise enough to have a real contact. Still very happy with the way the first round turned out.

Now to fix the dead laptop battery problem. My computer case and radio go box has just about every connector you could think of...

...except for the one connector I needed for this DC charger...

...to fit the new comms laptop I set up.

Lesson #3: Make sure all the charger connectors are the right ones for the equipment. I forgot to upgrade the charger. And with about a hundred connectors, not a one to fit the need. Somehow it always seems to come down to not having the right connector no matter how may you try to stock up on. Plan B, again. I dug in the Jeep and found an inverter, plugged the laptop in and went for a hike. A well stocked vehicle does come in handy!

After about an hour I tried again and found a wonderful CW conversation going on between two AmRRON operators. I am in the process of learning CW, not ready to send out my mess yet, couldn't have even if I had wanted to as I don't have a key for the rig yet.  One operator from north Utah and one from Montana tickled my ears for almost a half an hour. Thanks guys for the training opportunity! I found you both very easy to hear and that is what I have been struggling with the most. I did have fldigi running and it decoded most of the conversation but it always misses letters and decodes some wrong, those I was able to hear and fill in the blanks! Very encouraging for me, thanks again!

After their conversation I was able to have a wonderful QSO with a Corps operator from California at 25 watts. Signals were great and all the equipment cooperated!

All in all a great day, learned a lot and spent a few hours with the best group of people I've ever been involved with. Can't wait to do it again!

73's and God Bless our work!

T-Rex 2015

This post has little to do with gardening so if that is why you are here...sorry. I'm going to have a little fun with this and do a little play by play as the events unfold during this SHTF scenario. That is what T-Rex is all about, practicing to see if you are ready for a disaster or whatever may come along to mess up our comfortable lives.

Warning in advance: This post seems to have turned out a little long so if anybody actually reads the whole thing...Thanks for sticking in there!

The following is based on fictions news reports and radio messages.
I repeat this is all only an emergency preparedness exercise.
This is not based on real events (not yet...).

Monday August 2, 2015

Being a part of the AmRRON and Radio Free Redoubt family has it's perks. We are notified of world events that never make it into the main stream media, yesterday and today I received  messages that showed a potential to turn bad.

Saturday, 1 Aug (RFR) The government of Puerto Rico announced this morning all banks will be closed on Monday until further notice in order to conduct “an orderly restructuring of its $73 billion in debt”. It reassures all Puerto Ricans that“planned and simple” measures will have little impact on most and urges everyone to carry on with business as usual.

Wednesday August 5, 2015

Amazing, not a word of the rioting, looting or unrest in Puerto Rico until... it affected the US  and global stock markets. It started off with so little information that things quickly spiraled out of control with so much bad information and speculation  our country was sent into a panic. I thank God for AmRRON and the faithful operators who passed vetted information via the internet as long as it hold out and over radio if that fails.

Thursday morning August 6, 2015

Wow this is getting serious! Rioting and looting  only a few hundred miles from here in my quiet small town. We have been so spoiled here in the Pacific Northwest, we have so few disasters in our area we just have no experience preparing for them. I'm 55 years old and I remember only two occasions we were without power for more than an hour or two, a fluke wind storm that blew through in the early 60's and a snowstorm in February of 1969 that dropped 3 feet of snow, and our town shuts down with 2 inches! Society in the US has been civil for as long as anyone alive can remember, couple that with the comfort technology has brought and well we just are not ready for anything like what is going on all over our country right now. Time to stop and think about what would happen if this gets close enough or serious enough to affect us. In case of power failure I checked the gas in all the vehicles,  propane, gas and water in the RV storage tanks, made sure the "no power" cooking appliances were in working order and filled all the water tanks. Just basic stuff because who knows this could all blow over tomorrow.

Friday morning August 7, 2015

On battery power now, electricity went out at 9am this morning so I'll keep the updates short with only a few pictures. With the internet down and the way things are going I may never get to post this but I'll keep it up as best as I can anyway.

With prompting and education from Radio Free Redoubt and Partisan Radio podcasts I built a solar powered battery back up station for my radio and laptop out of a couple of almost new power wheelchair batteries, a plastic bin and a lot of the "make due with what you have" mentality from my Grandmother who lived in Oklahoma with my Grandfather and their 6 kids when the depression began.  They ended up in Oregon  after working their way through California. Anybody see Grapes of Wrath? That could have been my family's story. Rabbit trail....back to the subject...

The battery box, radio station and cook station are pictured below.
Better go get some more of the freezer stuff canned using the rocket stove before it starts thawing out and cook some yummy venison back strap with gravy in the sun oven.

Thank God again I listened and built the battery box. It enabled me to receive updated information on events nation wide via Ham radio. AmRRON put out a SOI (signal operating instructions) so that everyone knew when and where to tune to get the latest information.Wouldn't you know it, right when I wanted to hear what was going on the atmosphere conditions interfered with radio reception and I wouldn't have head anything but static if I had to rely on voice communications. During practice nets we learned how to connect using digital messages and a software that can receive and decode even under very bad conditions. I became hooked on digital last year during the AmRRON T-Rex 2014 when I was able to receive messages using only a portable shortwave radio and my laptop. Today with a multi band ham radio, a good antenna and a little more experience as an operator it could turn out be a real live saver, without digital Ham radio I would have been in the dark.

Friday  late evening August 7, 2015

What a day!  Mediocrity has been rampant in  America but I can say this - when something big comes along we usually do it bigger than anyone else and hope to get it right. Well looks like when the **** hits the fan we can do that in a big way too!
National update:
News reports from the AmRRON network have been coming in all day even with the poor radio conditions the Hams have been doing a splendid job of getting information out. I've received reports of a Sheriff in Northern California asking for assistance from local militia to protect from the criminal gangs pouring out of the cities, persistent power, phone and internet outages, a truck exploding on the freeway near Chattanooga Tennessee and a sizable force of organized criminals flying the Islamic flag in Arizona. I received a few more messages that were pretty garbled but the gist of them was the same,  when Americans fall apart they do it in a big way.

Local update:
National news isn't the only news, there is local. Along with keeping in touch with other members of our church via 2 meter ham radio I've been monitoring the local emergency agencies and it isn't good. Our area hasn't had the widespread rioting and looting, just a few unhappy that their state debit cards don't work gathering at the court house and state offices causing a bit of trouble and trouble finding a place for all the travelers seeking refuge from the interstate freeway that runs right through the  middle of town. The imminent danger here is with the wildfires. There are two very large fires in the county and when everything started spiraling out of control first the support people left to take care of their families, then a few firefighters jumped ship leaving the dedicated to an impossible and dangerous task, then the helicopters and planes stopped flying and now the fires are monsters.  With the current wind direction we are directly in the fire's path so I  better get busy loading the van and trailer and get ready to evacuate. Keep our country in your prayers, only God can save us now.

Saturday afternoon August 8, 2015

This morning was crazy to say the least. I have been helping with an emergency communications training course at a local church with about 12 scheduled for  every Saturday morning in August. We decided to go ahead with the class this morning as we were sure there would be a lot of questions due to the circumstances. I pulled into the parking lot an was astounded by the number of cars, there must be something else going on, maybe a prayer meeting? As we walked in the "class" had grown to almost 150! Radios of every kind were in the hands of would be operators who had no clue how to use them in a real life disaster and were desperate for a source of communication. We took a minute to regroup... The two of us couldn't teach that many how to operate their wide variety of radios in a couple of hours so our previous students became the teachers aides. We sent someone who lived close and owned a portable generator to fetch it so we could power the church copier to copy as many frequency list handouts as possible, broke up into small groups and proceeded to help as many as we could in the short time we had. We grouped the newcomers into radio type, there was everything from  the walkie talkie like FRS radios, handheld 2 meter ham radios, shortwave to antique tube type armature radios. Splitting them up and pairing them with appropriate teachers made it much simpler to field questions and get some real practical operating instructions in their hands. My partner in this class is  the brains of the group, a real teacher and experienced ham operating and working on radios since a kid. Me well I'm still just getting my feet wet but I found out a little knowledge is way better than none!

Saturday evening August 8, 2015

Atmospheric conditions continue to mess with radio reception, few messages today were complete but still able to copy enough to know things are not getting better on the national scene. Along with the bad conditions someone thought it would be funny to interfere every time someone tried to send a message and others sending bogus messages. Sometimes ya just gotta shake your head and trudge on, too much to work to do to waste time fighting against every jerk that comes along. The messages from non reliable resources would be hard to spot if you don't practice and get to know the procedure and details in the messages. Kind of like spotting a phishing email, there is always something just not right if you take the time to look.

The fires in our area continue to advance out of control and it's looking more and more like we will have to evacuate. If it wasn't the fires it would probably be the criminal element that seems to be invading from the interstate freeway. Today's radio reports confirmed my suspicion as Lake Tahoe, Nevada was taken over by gangs. Arizona is having much difficulty along the freeway with criminal gangs. Add that to the previously reported activity in other parts of the nation and we will probably evacuate soon before the violence makes it here from California or the Portland area.

Saturday late evening August 8, 2015

This is it, we have received confirmation it's time to initiate plan B and Bug Out.
Radio messages confirmed that FEMA and the United Nations are taking administrative control over the United States.
***WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT AND WE ARE HERE TO HELP***

And if you believe that I have a rain forest in Death Valley to sell you.
Pray for guidance from above, the fight has only begun.

The end

This has been a test of the God fearing, Liberty loving, Patriot
emergency radio operators community.
I repeat this is only a test .

Thank you to all the AmRRON operators and support personnel for this year's T-Rex, personally I really enjoyed it and to JJS - "the lady from Oregon" is almost a real Ham operator now!
Although the scenario is purely fiction enough reality is built in to get a person thinking on how events could really play out given today's real life news.
On that thought Its time to get busy, I've got things to do.....

Spring 2015 in the Garden

Winter was very mild here in Oregon this year and the green house shows it with a profusion on blooms on the nasturtiums and the geraniums. We were able to harvest salad greens all winter and only had to use the rocket heater once and it worked great!

Late May 2015 and the monster nasturtium, it overtook the walkway and started climbing up over the potato boxes. Not only veggies love aquaponics but flowers also grow amazingly huge.

I've tried many different plants in this system and have found that greens and herbs grow best. Tomatoes grow great but they tend to take over and shade out everything else! Melons, squash and cucumbers get mildew so bad in the moist environment it's not worth the effort.

Kind of a dark picture but the Jerusalem artichokes are starting to take off and the globe artichokes in the background are on their second year and  we have already enjoyed a few yummy snacks off of them.

With the growing season just starting it still looks a little bare but just wait...in a short few weeks it will be a jungle and there are more terraces in the master plan to fill the rest of the hillside.

A short few weeks later...

After a two week vacation I came home to a jungle in the greenhouse! I was so shocked at the overwhelming growth that I just dug in and cleaned it out before I thought to take any pictures. Below is the garden and greenhouse after the clean out and new planting the second week of June.

Oregon sugar pod snap peas absolutely love aquaponics and they produced for a couple of months last year, definitely looking forward to another long harvest of my favorite veggie! Below the peas and in some of the other beds are this years greens: kale, chard, perpetual spinach and lettuces along with a selection of herbs.

The monster nasturtium needed to give up its space for  newly seeded greens so it is gone :(  but it will be back as it produced tons of seed and the geranium is still going strong. The flowering plants seem to do best on the lower level beds in the slight shade. I've tried some veggies on the lower level but they always get leggy and don't produce well so this space is reserved for bee magnet plants.

I am stocking up on plenty of small fruit trees and perennials to fill up the upper terraces when I get them done. Apple, pear and paw paw trees, stevia, yakon, ashitaba and sorrel to name a few, I tried some mini banana but they didn't make it, i'll try again cause it seems if it's warm enough in the greenhouse for the avocado, lemon and lime that the banana should do alright too.

The Jerusalem artichokes must have grown 4 feet in the two weeks I was gone! They do best in full sun but I've had them here in these boxes under our huge Sycamore tree for three years now and they produce tons of tubers even though they don't get as tall as ones in full sun.

Onions, peppers, cukes, tons of tomatoes along with a couple of volunteer squash from last year are soon going to make a jungle out of these terraces.

I've laid down a bunch of new wood chips this year thanks to a neighbor taking out two trees and getting all the chips and also  upgraded this section with a path making is much easier to get around. To the left of the picture you can kind of see one of the new terraces,  more pics later but in them I've planted gogi berry, blue berry and potato to start. To the right are hardy kiwi, regular kiwi, Bolivian cucumber, squash and amaranth just sprouting.

Growing season has just started and already I've harvested pickling cukes, artichokes, radishes, rhubarb, peas and tons of greens. Looking forward to a good gardening season as long as the water holds out!

The Parable of the Sower - Mark 4

And again He began to teach by the sea. And a great multitude was gathered to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat in it on the sea; and the whole multitude was on the land facing the sea. Then He taught them many things by parables, and said to them in His teaching:
“Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds of the air came and devoured it. Some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away. And some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no crop. But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop that sprang up, increased and produced: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”
And He said to them, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

Spring in the Aquaponics Greenhouse

This has been winter 3 in the greenhouse and I have to say that the fresh salad greens all year is by far my favorite part of the whole project.

The fig tree is starting to bust out it's leaves, the volunteer avocado tree I dug out of the compost pile is growing fast and the flowers are a definite bright spot.

This really surprised me today when I found blossoms on the Gogi berry plants! Last year I bought one small plant and through out the summer I took cuttings of the new shoots, placed them to root in the gravel beds. Later this spring I will have about 8 plants to put out in the garden. I was definitely happy on how easily they rooted.

Hillside Garden Blank Canvas

In a few days spring will be here and our last frost date is less than 3 weeks away,
the hillside garden beds are ready!

Fresh mulch in the paths, horse poo and organic matter mixed into the beds... glad that job is done!

We had a very mild winter here in the Pacific Northwest and the garden beds show it. Chard, perpetual spinach, kale, onions and garlic are already growing fast.

In just a few weeks I am sure I will barely recognize these photos, the green will spread like wildfire.

Time to get out the shovel and the compost and garden!

When the ground soaks up the falling rain and bears a good crop for the farmer, it has God’s blessing. But if a field bears thorns and thistles, it is useless. The farmer will soon condemn that field and burn it.

New Rocket Heater in the greenhouse!

After seeing many YouTube videos on these Rocket Heaters I decided I wanted to build one in my greenhouse. I had too many grow beds for my water/fish ratio so I took one of the larger ones out to made room and proceeded to build a test stove...

Base laid using leftover supports from the former grow beds...

Basic structure of a standard 20 fire brick J tube rocket. Riser made from two pieces of black stove pipe with vermiculite for insulation.
( I know this will have to be replaced soon for a more permanent one)

I didn't get any more pics of the temporary one but I topped the riser off with a small metal barrel and sort of sealed everything by piling sand and pea gravel around it with a little cob around the bottom of the riser and the vent.

It smoked a little probably because it wasn't sealed good but it burned great and had a good rocket action. The barrel got up to 500 degrees while the exhaust pipe never got too hot to touch.

After deciding this would work great I tore the temp one apart and proceeded to build it right.

This is the almost finished product and it works great.

I still have to get a few more bricks and some sand and cob to finish it off but it works great!
I have only burned it once but with only a couple small armfuls of cut up branches the mass was all warm to the touch and the greenhouse was at about 60 while the outside temp was 35. Now I need to figure out a water heater system to go along with it....

That is for another day..

Matthew 11:28-30

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

So God Made a Patriot

"So God Made a Patriot", narrated by Fred Thompson

uplifting new video from Grassfire Productions

2 Chronicles 7:14

...if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves,

and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways,

then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
